Making a three dimensional object out of a printer seemed like an idea from a science fiction movie just a few years ago. But thanks to advancing technologies, 3D printer has become a reality and its popularity has taken the 3D printer industry to a new height. Targeted for mass market, many of these amazing machines can be purchased for less than $300 and still produce quality printed objects.
What is a 3D printer?
3D printer utilizes additive processes to lay down a tiny bit of material one layer at a time to slowly create a three dimensional object. 3D printing is the opposite of the conventional subtractive manufacturing processes which create the final object shape by milling or cutting out the material from a solid piece of metal or plastic. Because there’s no waste involved, 3D printer saves money by using a lot less material. Another advantage of the 3D printer is that it can produce complex shapes where the conventional milling machine can’t.

Choose 3D Design And Slicing Software
Before you can start using a 3D printer, you need to create your object using a 3D design software or 3D modeling software. There are many software to choose from and the prices range from thousands of dollars for professional license to free for open source software. For beginners, consider 3D Splash, SculptGL and OpenSCAD which are free with good user reviews. After your design file is created and sliced, it’s now ready to send it to the printer for printing.
If you’re intimidated or overwhelmed by the 3D software, there are lots of websites out there where you can download free STL files (software format for the 3D printer) and 3D models. Depending on your applications, you may just find all the models you need online for free.
